STEM Speaker Series: 2016-2017

The purpose of the Chabot College STEM Speaker Series is to expose students to professional either working or researching within STEM fields with the intent of inspiring them to pursue STEM degrees and eventually STEM careers.

Spring 2017

Amy McCarthy is currently a fifth year Ph.D. candidate at the California Institute of Technology. Under Professor James Heath she works on the development of synthetic macrocylic peptides that selectively inhibit mutated oncoproteins over their wild-type variants. Amy got her start in Chemistry as a high school junior in Dr. Wells Chemistry 31 class and went on to take Chemistry 1A, 1B, and 8 at Chabot Community College before beginning her undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley in 2008. While at UC Berkeley she worked on the total synthesis of bioactive terpenoid natural products with Professor Richmond Sarpong before graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry in 2012.

Caitlin Lucinese is a second year graduate student at CSU Stanislaus, earning her Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling. Originally from a small town in New Jersey, Caitlin received her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. After graduating in 2014, she took a gap year and worked at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.

Jeremy Kun is a mathematician and software engineer specializing in the applications of mathematics. He was born in San Francisco and grew up in Oakland and Moraga. He discovered mathematics as a passion late in his undergraduate studies, and then pursued a PhD in mathematics, specializing in theoretical computer science. Currently Jeremy works at a software startup, doing a mix of Bitcoin, web development, and data analytics. He also writes a popular blog called Math Intersect Programming.

Fall 2016

Phillip Persley is a Senior Actuarial Analyst at Collective Health a healthcare startup that administers health plans for large employers. Having graduated from Berkeley in with a degree in Applied Math, Phillip was actively involved in STEM outreach and development as an undergraduate teaching assistant, mentor and holding leadership positions in STEM related student groups.

LaTasha Mitchell joined us from the UCSF School of Medicine Office of the Post Baccalaureate and Outreach Program. She covered developing a competitive application, preparing for the MCAT, understanding the application process and information on the UCSF School of Medicine application. Daniel Redline is a Senior Clinical Program Manager with over two decades of experience. He currently works in the HIV division for Gilead Sciences, Inc. a research-based biopharmaceutical company. He will discussed the intricacies related to the design and conduct of clinical trials.

Azania Selden does chemistry research for an agro-chemical startup in San Francisco and believes her “unconventional” background of studying and doing a variety of scientific research in a liberal arts women’s college brings a level of creativity and knowledge to a normally homogenous field.

Trevor Gonzalinajec earned a Ph.D. in Biophysics from UC Berkeley in 2015 and now is an adjunct professor for multiple bay area colleges and Universities.
